HOOP SCOOP COVERAGE OF JULY 15 – 19 2012 SESSION

Wednesday, July 16, 2012

I attended the three all-star games last night at Rick Bolus' High Potential Blue Chip Basketball Camp at Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY and, in my not so humble opinion, the best prospect in the camp was 6'1 8th Grader Peyton Broughton from London (North Laurel) KY.  He not only was named the Camp MVP in the Junior Division, but he also scored eight points and took home MVP honors for his team in the Top All-Star Game.  On the court he's like a point/forward due to the fact that he often brings the ball up the court and has good handling and passing skills, he can guard smaller and quicker and guards, and he rebounds very well for his size and isn't afraid to battle against bigger guys on the boards.   And, as long as we're starting out with the younger players n camp, 5'8 8th Grader Dominique Knight from Louisville (Jefferson County Traditional) KY edged out 5'7 Frosh Gregory Frist from Louisville (Christian Academy) KY for MVP honors on the other team in the Junior Division All-Star Game.  Knight has good athleticism, a knack for being able to get to the basket, and good ball handling and passing skills, which he uses to set up his teammates and make them better.  Frist was one of the best 3-point shooters in camp, but he did all of his damage early in the game and he's pretty much a one dimensional player.  Also elevating himself above all of the rest was 6'1 Frosh Joeb Bartley from Floyds Knobs (Floyd Central) IN, who did a good job running court and also was very effective on the boards and with his ability to knock down the outside shot.  The two runner-up MVP's in this Division were 5'8 8th Grader Collin Miller from Liberty (Casey County) KY and 6'4 Frosh Conner Sturgeron from Floyds Knobs (Floyd Central) IN, but neither did enough in the all-star game to distinguish themselves from the long list of other players named to play in this game, which also included 5'6 8th Grader Jared Osborne from Shepherdsville (Zoneton) KY, 5'11 8th Grader Chris Howard from Franklin (Grassland) TN, 5'7 8th Grader Saxton Thurston from St. Joseph (Bode) MO, 5'9 8th Grader Gavin Root from Elizabethtown (Bluegrass) KY, 6'0 8th Grader Treyce Spurlock from Walllins (H.S.) KY, 6'3 8th Grader Hunter Copeland from Sparta (White County) TN, 5'11 Frosh Ethan Snapp from Newport (H.S.) KY, 5'9 Frosh Cade Crosland from Sparta (White County) TN, 5'4 8th Grader Cooper Williams from Owensboro (College View) KY, 5'6 8th Grader Cameron Stephens from Sellersburg (Silver Creek) IN, 5'10 Frosh Michael Williams from Blytheville (H.S.) AR, 5'11 8th Grader Logan Swoape from Sparta (White County) TN, 5'11 9th Grader Alexander Shylem from Berea (H.S.) KY, and 6'2 8th Grader Chase Longest from Floyds Knobs (Floyd Central) IN.  The two MVP's in the Second All-Star Game of the High School Division were 6'5 Jr Caleb Wigginton from Campbellsville (Taylor County) KY, who finished with 14 points and knocked down four 3-point shots, and 6'2 Jaucoby Poore from Glasgow (Barron County) KY, who finished with 13 points, most of which came off passes in transition from 6'0 Jalen Oliver from Frankfort (H.S.) KY.  Speaking of Oliver, he did not score any of his seven points until late in the game, but his excellent court vision and good ball handling and passing skills made him one of the unsung heroes of the game.  Also on the list of players named to play in this Second All-Star Game were 6'0 Devin Mayfield from Louisville (Atherton) KY, 6'6 Jr Tal Kubani from Israel. 5'10 Deonquez Nance from Cadiz (Trigg County) KY, 6'2 Jr Jordan Smith from Dayton (Dunbar) OH, 6'1 Jr Grant Hampton from Bradford (H.S.) TN, 5'10 Tyler Harville from Lexington (Christian Academy) KY, 6'0 Jalen Oliver from Frankfort (H.S.) KY, 6'0 Jamaal Calvin from Chattanooga (McCallie) TN, 6'6 Tyler Landry from Radcliff (North Hardin) KY, 6'5 Jr Daniel Kanakanul from Jamestown (Lucy Ragsdale) NC, 6'5 Jr Joe Bob Charles from Ellijay (Gilmer) GA, 5'11 Tyler Hopkins from Palm Coast (Flagler Palm Coast) FL, 6'0 Jr Teddy Ware from Lexington (Henry Clay) KY, 6'0 Jr Cody Hildebrand from Payson (Seymour) IL, 5'8 Buddy Johnson from Shelbyville (Collins) KY, 6'3 Travis Hardcastle from Bowling Green (South Warren) KY, 6'6 Soph Skyler Hunter from Murray (Callaway County) KY, 5'11 Andrew Steggeman from Louisville (Collegiate) KY, and 6'0 Daniel Weymier from Greenfield (Whitnall) WI.  The best part about the Top All-Star Game in the High School Division was watching the acrobatic moves and spectacular dunks by 6'4 Michael Morgan from Charlotte (Creek Wood) TN.  He's more of a slasher than a shooter, but he's an explosive athlete with a flare for the spectacular and he shared game MVP honors with 6'6 Joel Wurm from Georgetown (LaSalette Academy) IL, who finished with 13 points and was very effective in the post.  The Camp MVP in this age group was 6'4 Ronald Lewis from Westchester (St. Joseph) IL, but he had only three points and was not much of a factor in the all-star game.  Instead, it was guys like 6'2 Joshua Stoner from Louisville (Male) KY, 5'10 Tyler Harville from Lexington (Christian Academy) KY, 5'11 9th Grader Braxton Beverly from Hazard (Perry County Central) KY, who finished in double-digits and hit more than their share of long range bombs en route to 17 points, 14 points, and 13 points apiece for their respective teams.  Also named to play in the Top All-Star Game were 6'7 Soph Nathan Wilborn from Owensboro (Apollo) KY, 6'7 Jr Trevor Jenkins from Morgantown (Butler County) KY, 6'6 Taylor King from Lexington (Dunbar) KY, 6'3 Michael Moss from Frankfort (Lincoln Way-East) IL, 6'0 Jr Sam Sergeant from Owensboro (Apollo) KY, 5'8 Brandon Price from Elizabethtown (John Hardin) KY, 6'2 Peter Nelson from Lakewood (H.S.) OH, 6'7 Dalton Nelson from Salisbury (East Rowan) NC, 6'3 Randel Pickett from Louisville (Southern) KY, 6'0 Kelton Ford from Hodgenville (LaRue County) KY, 6'2 Ty Hairston from Louden (H.S.) TN, 6'4 Soph Isaiah Moss from Frankfort (Lincoln Way-East) IL, 6'5 LaDarius Watkins from Chattanooga (East Hamilton) TN, 6'2 Jacob Griffin from Richmond, KY, and 6'3 Cole Schafer from Evansville, IN.
