HOOP SCOOP COVERAGE OF JUNE 26 – 30 2011 SESSION
Thursday, June 30, 2011
We were kind of surprised that 6'3 Soph Darryl Hicks from Louisville (Trinity) KY was not named the Camp MVP when we received a list of all of the award winners last night at the High Potential "Blue Chip" Basketball Camp in Georgetown, KY. However, after watching 5'9 Jr Devante Jones from Chicago (Orr) IL in the Top All-Star Game, there is no doubt in our mind that this was the right call, as this jet quick point guard who thrives in an up tempo setting took home Camp MVP honors. We're talking about somebody with great court vision and excellent passing skills, tremendous body control, and a knack for being in the right place at the right time, which allows him to be an excellent rebounder and create all kinds of havoc in the passing lanes and at the defensive end. He also likes to pull the trigger and has incredible hops, which he used earlier in the camp to become the Slam Dunk Champ. And to make the story even more interesting is the fact that Jones was totally under the radar until we saw him at this camp. As a matter of fact, Jones is such a big sleeper that it's hard to find anything that has ever been written about him on the internet. However, he was clearly better than Hicks, who is a legitimate top 25-50 ranked rising junior nationally, and the only thing that might scare high major schools that want to recruit him is his lack of size. The other player who stole the show was 6'7 Jr Mike Marietti from New Lenox (Providence Catholic) IL, who was named the Camp Runner-Up MVP and finished with 14 points and numerous rebounds en route MVP honors for his team in the Top All-Star Game. What Marietti lacks in speed, quickness, and athleticism he more than makes up for with his skills and post moves around the basket, toughness on the boards, and willingness to run the court. Also really impressing us in the Top All-Star Game was 6'9 Jr Xzavier Taylor from New Lenox (Providence Catholic) IL, who finished with eight points and shared Top Underclassman honors with Hicks. Taylor showed that he is capable of stepping outside and knocking down the open three. But what we liked the most was his length, athleticism, hands, and knack for getting things done away from the ball, as he did a great job of setting picks and screens and anticipating rebounds. We also think 6'9 Soph Zachariah Garber from Vanlue (H.S.) OH, 6'4 Jr Adrian Jeffries from Chicago (Morgan Park) IL, 6'6 Jr Malcolm Pittman from Wayne (Huber Heights) OH, and 5'10 Jr Jamel Waters from Birmingham (Ramsey) AL deserve special mention for the way they played in the Top All-Star Game. Waters is a small quick point guard with good ball handling and passing skills and the ability to knock down treys. Pittman does a good job of scoring and rebounding around the basket. Jeffries is a fluid athlete who is at his best in the open court and when he's going strong to the basket. Garber had 12 points and more than held his own while matched up inside Marietti en route to his team's MVP honors in the Top All-Star Game. Also on the list of players named to play in the Top All-Star Game were 5'10 Anthony Parker from Gainesville (St. Francis) FL 6'8 Kaspars Brencans from Melbourne (Florida Air Academy) FL, 6'4 Jr Max Clemons from Louisville (Pleasure Ridge Park) KY, 6'2 Jr Cortez Macklin from Louisville (Pleasure Ridge Park) KY, 6'2 Jr Warford Tyler from Greenville (Muhlenberg County) KY, 6'7 Jr Lawrence Smith from Hopkinsville (H.S.) KY, 6'6 Jr Trae Wilson from Williston (H.S.) FL, 6'1 Jr Dayvohn Braxton from Indianapolis (Lawrence North) IN, 6'0 Jr Alex Bran from Collierville (St. George's) TN, 5'10 Soph Mike Smith from Lexington (Sayre) KY, and 6'3 Soph Logan O'Bryan from Owensboro (Daviess County) KY, and 6'3 Frosh Jeril Taylor from Louisville (Pleasure Ridge Park) KY. The Second All-Star Game featured several snipers and a couple big guys with intriguing size and potential. We start with 6'0 Jr Zach Chaykowsky from Barlow (Ballard Memorial) KY, who knocked down three 3-pointers en route to 15 points and his team's MVP honors. There also was 6'2 Jr Logan Wade from Louisville (Christian) KY, who likes to pull the trigger from way behind the arc and also was camp Backcourt 3-Point Shooting Champ. We also suspect that 6'2 Jr Travis Combs from Manchester (H.S.) KY was one of the better shooters in camp, but what won him All-Star MVP honors for his team was his willingness to run the court, score in transition, and always seem to be in the right place to make the right play at the right time. It's also safe to say that 6'10 Jr Darius Lewis from Lexington (Tates Creek) KY is more of a project than a finished product right now, but he did score around the basket and is more than just a solid rebounder. And, of course, we have to mention 6'7 Jr Brian Stone from Shelbyville (Collins) KY, who demonstrated a soft mid-range shooting touch and used his athleticism to slash to the basket. We also want to provide you with all of the other award winners, as the Top Ballhandler was 5'8 Soph Trey Marcum from Stanton (Powell County) KY, the Top Passer was 5'10 Soph Shai-Shai Matthews from Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA, the Top Defender was 6'1 Frosh Tyler Jenkins from Indianapolis (Franklin Central) IN, the Top Rebounder was 6'3 Soph Benjamin Allen from Mt. Vernon (Rockcastle County) KY, and the Top Shooter was 6'0 Soph Taylor Gover from Somerset (Pulaski County) KY. IN. The High Potential "Blue Chip" Basketball Camp also featured a Junior Division and the crowd favorite and All-Star Game MVP for his team was 5'3 5th Grader Jordan Simmons from Chicago Heights (St. Paul Lutheran) IL. He tells us that he just turned 11-years-old, which makes him the right age for his class. But he's got great court savvy, excellent ball handling and passing skills, and he has no fear when it comes time to getting his shot and challenging all of the trees on the court. The other All-Star Game MVP for his team and the co-Camp Runner-Up MVP was 6'0 7th Grader Jamal Burton from Chicago (Carter B. Woodson) IL. And what he did best was use his explosiveness and athleticism to slash to the basket.
