TYPICAL CAMP DAY FOR ME

Being the camp director, one would expect I would have banker's hours at the High Potential/Blue-Chip Basketball Camp at Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY. I wish! I put in 16 hours day beginning at 7 AM when I first arrive and ending at 11 PM when I leave the gym. Unlike many camp directors who leave the work to their staff and only make token appearances, I am a working camp director who is the first person in the gym each morning and the last one to leave each evening. There is no golf or swimming in my schedule camp week! Below are typical duties for me each day.

  • Radio my night dorm monitor to see how things went
  • Charge the 2-Way Radios
  • Prepare the gym for morning station work and league games
  • Update the won-lost record board
  • Put numerals on T-shirts
  • Monitor fundamental stations, league games, team practices, guest speakers, competition contests and the concession stand
  • Check with each coach to see who is MIA for an event
  • Assist in getting an injured camper to the hospital
  • Evaluate the players during league play in which the campers play three games daily. I observe each camper play at least once during the day
  • Compile the all-stars and award winners

Those are the primary duties for me but there are others. I do not leave the gym for any reason and in fact, eat lunch and supper in the gym while watching games.

Not a bad day's work for one who is 67 years old!

CAMP PREPARATION THIS WEEK

This time of the year is extremely busy for me as I prepare for the 38th Annual High Potential Blue-Chip Basketball Camps at Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY. Our first session starts June 25th. Many people think that all I do is show up and throw the balls out on the court! I wish it was that easy. Our camp operation is a year around job and below are the duties of yours truly for all camps.

  • Prepare the mailing lists once camp is over
  • Update the email listing which is around 8,000
  • Design the camp brochure and web page
  • Order T-shirts and trophies
  • Put players on teams
  • Arrange housing assignments for players and staff
  • Clean equipment and U-Haul it to Georgetown College
  • Do the payroll for the staff
  • Print and put together the camp program
  • Make out a duty roster for all staff members
  • Put numbers on camp T-shirts
  • Organize the concession stand

There are a lot more responsibilities but I listed the most important ones. I personally do each of the above jobs which is why the High Potential/Blue-Chip Camp is the number one camp in America. Tomorrow, I'll describe what a typical day is like for me at camp!
